Weird Stuff
I've watched several videos on YouTube about people who are blaming their Smartphones for being distracting, how they're leaving them at home, not taking them here or there because of all the notifications, etc. The thought that came to me is "You know you can turn that stuff off, right?" Seriously, you can turn off notifications, set specific ones, silence the phone, etc. You can even, wait for it, TAKE APPS OFF THE PHONE! I have no social media on my phone. Zero, zip, nada. I have some work apps, some banking apps, that sort of stuff, and the notifications are turned off. When I'm out to eat with someone, or in church, the ringer is on silent. Seriously, you can do this. Yes, there will be an adjustment period, but after a while, YOU will be controlling the phone, not the other way around.
I often ask myself why I'm addicted to smartphones, but not computers. My laptop is 6 years old, my iPad 5. I upgraded my home computer last year, after 5 years. I upgraded my phone after a year. I'd had every iPhone from the 11 series to the 14. I had my 14 Pro Max for 2 years, and went to the smaller 16 Pro. That was an excellent phone. I switched to the 17 Pro Max in January. I decided I needed the larger screen. I really like it and have decided I need to break the habit. So I have determined that I need to keep this phone for a minimum of 3 years. My goal is at least 5. That is going to be hard for me. Yes, kind of hypocritical of me considering the above paragraph. Ain't being human fun?!
I'm currently reading several books. Two relate to the same topic, eschatology. One is the Parousia by J Stewart Russell, and the other is Days of Vengeance by David Chilton. Excellent reads! End Times stuff drives many people off their nut. They have bought into the Dispensational 'Left Behind' stuff. I was there for a while, but I didn't grow up in it, so I wasn't always swimming in that pond. I've read a lot of stuff on the subject, but after I read Last Day's Madness by Gary DeMar, it opened a whole new world to me. Anyway, the other book I'm reading is Strange New World by Carl R Trueman. VERY good read! Look them up on Amazon. I have Russell's book on my Kindle. Chilton's book was purchased from American Vision. Lots of good books are available there.
It's very hard to change one's patterns of thought. Things that happen to us throughout our lives shape the paths many of our thoughts take. It's hard to break those patterns and move them onto a different, better path. It can be done, but it takes time and determination.
That's all I have today. Now for some Earl Grey and more reading.
May the Lord bless you, and keep you. May His face shine upon you, be gracious to you. The Lord turn His face towards you, and give you peace.
